This shell contains nine pellets of #1 buckshot. Not #1 shot, which is 0.16” in diameter – #1 buckshot, which is 0.30” in diameter. The #1 buckshot pellet is 0.03” smaller in diameter than the more conventional 00 buckshot pellet, and it weighs less as well (40.5 grains as opposed to 53.8 grains). That’s why this shell’s shot column weighs about 0.83 ounces instead of 1.1 ounces. But thanks to its weight reduction, this shell is able to produce a zesty muzzle velocity of 1,325 fps without creating an inordinate amount of recoil.
This shell’s hinged wad simultaneously reduces felt recoil and shot deformation. The lead shot pellets themselves are plated with nickel, which does even more to preserve their spherical, aerodynamic and tight-patterning profiles during ignition. Hard nickel also helps the shot pellets plunge deeper into their target. It all comes packaged in a handy black plastic field box – not as tough as a steel ammo can, but a nice little container all the same.
